Just when you thought things couldn't get any crazier in the world of AI, ChatGPT has started talking. Yes, you read that right. OpenAI has rolled out an advanced voice mode for ChatGPT, and it's already impressing a select group of ChatGPT Plus subscribers. So, how long before our AI overlords take over? Not sure, but at least they'll sound pretty cool doing it.

ChatGPT Robot Speaking to Human
It's only been a couple of days since this feature launched, but the internet is buzzing with clips showcasing ChatGPT's new vocal talents. The AI can sing, mimic various accents, correct language pronunciation, and even engage in narrative storytelling. One standout example features ChatGPT telling a story as if it's an airline pilot addressing passengers mid-flight. The AI nails the intercom sound effect, though it stumbles a bit with more complex requests like adding engine noises. Still, its clear and emotive voice, coupled with the ability to handle interruptions, is quite impressive.

In one YouTube conversation, ChatGPT reveals it can process inputs in dozens of languages, although the exact number varies based on dialects and regional variations. Clips show it correcting French pronunciation with precise tips on inflection and telling an emotive story in Turkish. While some native Turkish speakers noted the accent wasn't perfect, ChatGPT completed the story and even reacted with laughter and tears at appropriate moments.

The bot also demonstrates a decent grasp of regional US accents, with videos featuring New York, Boston, Wisconsin, and even a stereotypical "valley girl" accent. Not stopping there, ChatGPT's singing abilities are on full display, delivering a bluesy rendition of "Happy Birthday" and humorously attempting to sing like frogs and cats.

Across these demos, various male and female voices are heard, though none include the Scarlett Johansson-esque "Sky" voice, which was removed from the service in May.

If you're feeling left out and eager to try this feature, good news! OpenAI spokesperson Taya Christianson mentioned that the advanced voice mode will be available to all ChatGPT Plus subscribers by this fall. So, if you're willing to shell out $20 a month, you, too, can experience the future of AI conversation. For now, sit back and enjoy the snippets making their way online. The era of talking AI is here, and it's off to an entertaining start.
