Well, the holiday madness had begun. The day after Thanksgiving was Friday. More importantly, for merchants and consumers, it was Black Friday. You know, the long-famous tradition we've all come to love or hate, depending on where you stand with the shopping madness.
There have been mixed messages about consumer spending habits. One camp says shoppers are spending less and budgeting more, with online shoppers holding out for deals.
Then there's Shopify, which has contradicted all that "consumers are spending less" stuff.
This year, the platform managed to grab a
Black Friday record of $4.1B in sales.
According to Shopify, "From the crack of dawn in New Zealand through the final minutes in California, our merchants drove a 22% increase in sales over last year. Shopping peaked when collective sales reached $4.2 million per minute at 12:01 p.m. EST on Friday."
Go ahead and wrap your head around that for a minute. We'll wait.
The big-selling countries were the US, of course, the UK, and Canada, with Los Angeles, New York, and London leading the charge. Industries scoring the best were personal care, clothes, and jewelry, with the average cart containing $110.71 in goodies. Doesn't sound like anybody's being frugal there.
While the smoke is still clearing from Black Friday's shopping spree, Shopify is already planning on more madness with Cyber Monday. However you look at it, consumers are spending money, and Shopify, for one, is giddy with holiday excitement.
